Moving House, Running a Business & Doing Admin at 70mph

Moving House, Running a Business & Doing Admin at 70mph

Moving house is stressful.

Moving house while running a growing small business?

A completely different level of chaos.

Right now, life feels like a constant cycle of boxes, lists, packing tape, emails, website updates and trying to remember what on earth I was supposed to do next.

We’re in the middle of moving to Cornwall, which is incredibly exciting and something I’ve wanted for a long time.

But getting from “we're moving” to actually being moved is a whole different story.

The business doesn't stop

One thing I've realised during this move is that unfortunately, my business doesn't pack itself into a box and wait patiently for me to finish moving.

There are still orders to process.

Customers to reply to.

Social media to keep up with.

Products to list.

Photos to take.

Descriptions to write.

And approximately a million little bits of admin that need doing.

When you're a one-person business, there isn't really anyone else to hand these jobs over to.

So I've had to get creative with my time.

Six hours in the car = six hours of admin

One of the strangest parts of this whole process has been the six-hour drive to and from our new home.

Obviously, I'm not doing admin while I'm driving!

But when I'm travelling as a passenger, those long journeys have suddenly become my little mobile office.

Laptop out.

Phone charged.

Coffee within reach.

And let's get some work done.

While one journey might normally feel like six hours of sitting around, I'm now using that time to work through the never-ending list of business jobs.

It's not glamorous.

There are no fancy office views.

Just me, a laptop, a car and probably far too much coffee.

But it's helping me stay on top of things while everything else feels completely upside down.

Giving the website a little refresh

One of the biggest jobs I've been working on during this move is updating Crafts with Lauren.

As the business has grown, so has the product range.

And that means some of my website photos and descriptions needed a bit of love.

I've been working through products and:

📸 Updating product photography
✍️ Rewriting website descriptions
🔎 Improving SEO
🛍️ Making listings clearer for customers
✨ Making sure products are properly represented
📱 Checking how everything looks across the website

It's one of those jobs that you don't necessarily see as a customer, but it makes such a difference.

I want the website to feel like the best possible representation of the businesses and the products I spend so much time making.

Doing it all in the middle of chaos

The slightly ridiculous thing is that I'm doing all of this while surrounded by moving boxes.

There are probably still things packed away that I desperately need.

There are lists everywhere.

There are things to organise at the old house and things to organise at the new house.

And somewhere amongst all of that, I'm trying to remember that I also run a business.

But honestly?

I'm quite proud of myself for keeping things moving.

It might not be perfect.

It might take me longer to reply to a message.

I might occasionally realise I've completely forgotten something.

And my office currently consists of whatever surface I can find.

But I'm doing it.

A very busy new chapter

Moving to Cornwall is something we're incredibly excited about.

It's a huge life change, but it's one we're making because we love the place and genuinely want to build our next chapter there.

And I'm determined that the business will come with me.

So for now, I'm juggling moving boxes with product listings, packing tape with SEO and six-hour car journeys with website updates.

It's chaotic.

It's exhausting.

It's occasionally overwhelming.

But it's also incredibly exciting.

Because every bit of admin I do, every product photo I update and every box I pack is another tiny step towards our new life.

So if you see me online over the next few weeks looking like I've got my life together...

Please know that somewhere nearby there is probably a half-packed box, a cold cup of coffee and a very long to-do list.

Welcome to moving house with a small business.

It's chaos.

But it's our chaos. 🤍🌊
